GM. This is Super Motion, the irregular newsletter about creative technology and what we’re up to at SMC. Here’s what we got for you today:
AI gets a new skillet - 3D modelling
AI helps you animate
Artists embrace AI for virtual production
Artists protest AI
SMC updates - new short film + latest podcast episode
In fact, the title of this newsletter was written using chat.openai.com (see below). All the articles shared below we read (and enjoyed - and thought you would too). The article summaries are actually written by AI also.
As I put this newsletter together it feels like the future of creativity + AI is both exciting but also like a cautionary tale waiting to happen.

OpenAI releases Point-E, which is like DALL-E but for 3D modelling. Don’t worry, its not that good (yet).
OpenAI releases Point-E, which is like DALL-E but for 3D modeling. Its resolution isn't great but it's up to two magnitudes faster than competing systems. If you'd like to try it out for yourself, OpenAI has posted the projects open-source code on Github.

Artists protest about AI on ArtStation
ArtStation, a platform that allows game, film, media, and entertainment artists to connect and showcase their portfolios, has been flooded with the same image posted over and over by different users. The image features a large red "no" sign covering the word "AI" paired with a caption that reads “NO TO AI GENERATED IMAGES.” Artists began protesting against the platform by uploading the image onto their portfolios.

Short Film - “Mission to Minerva”
A few of us freelance creators at Super Motion Collective got together to create a submission for the Kitbash3D “Mission to Minerva” challenge.
Watch the SMC “Mission to Minerva” short film here
It took around 2 weeks for the team of three to create 1min 25secs of animation. The team used Unreal Engine to make the short film and developed a unique Post-Processing material to achieve the “Moebius” aesthetic. We will be doing a breakdown on YouTube very soon about the material and aiming to make that same material available on the Unreal Engine Marketplace early in 2023.

The film didn’t win any prizes in the Kitbash challenge, but it has garnered some very positive feedback via YouTube and LinkedIn. The three creators of the film (Alessandro Manghi, Paul Booth, and Fred Suddell) intend to make some minor improvements and potentially add in a few extra scenes that weren’t possible to achieve in the two-week timescale. Expect a few more Youtube videos sharing the process and results soon.
That’s it for now. If you want to work with any of the freelance talent who are part of the Super Motion Collective, reach out: https://supermotioncollective.com/contact
Happy holidays, see you next year :)
